Maintaining good behaviour - The Code of Conduct

All children are expected to observe a code of conduct, which allows for the comfort and safety for everyone at Thimphu Primary School. Good manners, consideration and respect for others are a requirement for all.
Ultimately the only effective discipline is self – discipline. Self-discipline is a very positive thing and should be encouraged through every aspect of a student’s curriculum. The self-discipline we wish to encourage at Thimphu Primary School is based on the agreed Code of Conduct.

Good Behaviour is based on a partnership

Good behaviour will only be ensured if the Code of Conduct used at the school is supported and reinforced at home. The encouragement of good behaviour is therefore based on a partnership between staff and parents.

Good behaviour is sustained by example and encouragement not coercion.

An important way in which the younger students acquire their patterns of behaviour is through observing the role models of their elders including their parents, the staff and older students. The example set by these must be consistent with the conduct expected from the younger students. It should also reflect the school’s Code of conduct which is itself founded on the concept of mutual respect. Real respect has to be earned and cannot be demanded or imposed. Good behaviour will only be lasting, therefore, if it is based on encouragement and the reinforcement of positive achievement which may be through the application of the school’s system of rewards – merit stars etc.

Sanctions are reasonable, effective and fairly and consistently applied In a small Primary School, serious behavioural problems are rare. The class teacher initially deals with any issue and if the results are not positive, it is discussed with the headmistress. Following these discussions, if appropriate, parents are informed and become involved in any merit or demerit system. Corporal Punishment is not allowed at Thimphu Primary School.
