Beside our government syllabus, the school will be following the XCEED programme in all subjects except Dzongkha.
The XCEED programme is a curriculum that is broad, balanced and relevant. The school shares the high expectations of parents for their children to acquire a wealth of knowledge and understanding and a range of appropriate skills.
Reception
In English a rich language programme enables students to communicate through talking, listening, reading and writing. The aim is to develop competence in all language skills and encourage an awareness of its use across the curriculum.
In mathematics the students develop confidence and the ability to think clearly and logically. They are also encouraged to think independently and flexibly. Opportunities are provided to the students to explore through practical experiences such as sorting, matching, sequencing and counting.
From class 1 up to class IV students continue to develop their English and Mathematics alongside other subjects. There is a strong emphasis on practical exploration particularly in the science and arts. Information Technology, History, Geography, General Knowledge and Environmental Studies are also taught. Much of the syllabus is related to themes which run through class-work, in all subjects.
The letterland phonic system is taught in Reception and class 1.
A new Reading Scheme will be introduced throughout the school, this year.
All classes have two music lessons, two computer lessons and two art lessons every week. The use of the school library is open to all classes during the week.
Physical Activities
Our urban children are surrounded by unfortunate temptations of the wrong food and entertainment where they sit in doors with little exercise. We continually highlight the message that exercise leads to a healthy lifestyle and we encourage this attitude in our young students.
All classes have a double lesson of games each week, where they have jogging, fun games, races, ball skills, and team games, all simple activities but enjoyable.
They have a wide choice of activities during their morning break with all the necessary equipment. These break activities ensure they return to class mentally more alert for their academic work.
We have professional coaches in cricket, basketball, golf and football, who generously give their time to coach the higher classes after school.
Confidence building and a sense of achievement by participating in physical activities is so important and we encourage it in all our students.
PE at Thimphu Primary School helps pupils to:
- Experience the enjoyment of physical activity
- Develop self esteem
- Develop co-operation and tolerance
- Learn to face and respond to challenges
- Participate in physical activity whatever their ability
- Develop and maintain physical fitness
- Understand the structure, function and care of the body
