Homework Policy

Homework is an important part of the school’s approach to help young people work, think and learn on their own. Over a five year period, regular homework is equivalent to an extra year’s education, with all the consequent benefits.

The aims of homework:
  • To develop the ability to work alone
  • To encourage self motivation and good organizational skills
  • To develop the skills to research, organize and present work on a given theme or topic.
  • To allow the student to consolidate and extend the work done in class, or prepare for the following lesson.
  • To encourage the habit of reading.
  • To encourage the habit of regular work at home so that good routines are established.

Maximum recommended homework times
Reception     20 minutes
In the Reception year the student is still mainly learning through play and should enjoy the learning experience, therefore homework at this age should be limited to 20minutes per evening.
Year 1     30 minutes
Year 2     40 minutes
Year 3     1 hour
Year 4     1-1 and 1/2 hours
Parental support is vital in seeing that homework is done conscientiously and in the best possible conditions.
